Where the title for this project came from

Skate spots are the above sea level versions of artificial reefs. In the ocean, reefs are made of a variety of objects that vary from place to place. There are reefs made of coral, rock, sand, and some are formed over sunken manmade objects. In the same way, skate spot reefs are made of a variety of materials.

A skate park with its ramps, half pipes, and objects has much in common with an artificial ocean reef. But any skate spot, even the most humble, a curb or ledge, or even a flat parking lot can be seen as a reef.

Reef of the Mind

More than sunken or dry land objects, a reef is an imaginary complex structure in the mind. In the mind of the skater or surfer exists a number of shapes and objects built over time, the moves that he or she is able to do. As a collection of materials they are jumbled in memory, but when connected in action, through reflex and improvisation in the sequence of skilled movement, they have order and unity.

Any questions or comments about Reef Material,
I'll try to answer. Make the subject line say something about skating.
